A Tribute to Victor: A Beautiful Soul, a Tower of Strength
To try and capture the essence of my brother, Victor, is to speak of a man with the kindest, most caring heart and a truly loving soul. He was a pillar for our family and a defender of the vulnerable, whether they walked on two legs or four. His love knew no borders, and his generosity left an indelible mark on everyone lucky enough to be a part of his life.
Though his life journey took him away from us geographically, Victor’s heart always remained rooted in South Africa. We will forever cherish the memories of the numerous times he returned home just to spend quality time with us. He absolutely spoiled us whenever he was here, pouring out his love through his presence, his laughter, and his boundless generosity. He cared deeply for his family back home, and distance never diminished the warmth of his protective embrace.
That fierce love and protection were felt profoundly by my youngest son, Byron. When Byron immigrated to America ten months ago, navigating a completely new world, it was Victor who stepped in without a second thought. He helped Byron settle, opening his heart and his world to him, serving as an absolute tower of strength whenever Byron needed anything at all. We will be forever thankful for the unconditional kindness and love he enveloped Byron in during such a monumental transition.
Victor’s extraordinary capacity to care wasn’t just reserved for humans; he had a profound love for all animals, a trait woven into the very fabric of his being. One story from his youth perfectly captures this beautiful trait. While serving in the military and stationed in the Caprivi Strip—an area that bore witness to major military conflict during the South African Border War—Victor encountered a tragedy born of the crossfire. A female monkey had been killed, leaving behind a tiny, helpless baby monkey to fend for itself.
Where others might have walked past, Victor did not hesitate. He rescued the little soul, feeding it, protecting it, and nursing it with a gentle devotion. The baby monkey grew to believe Victor was its mother, and the two formed a deeply moving, caring bond amidst the harsh realities of a war zone. When his term of service came to an end, Victor couldn’t bear to leave his little companion behind. In true Victor fashion, he successfully smuggled the baby monkey inside his coat right onto the plane and brought it all the way home!
Of course, our Mother was deeply concerned because keeping a wild monkey at home simply wasn’t possible. She contacted the local Pretoria Zoo, who gladly offered to take the monkey and continue the care Victor had so lovingly started. It remains a legendary testament to the lengths Victor would go to protect a living creature in need.
Victor, you gave your love freely, you protected us fiercely, and you brought light wherever you went. Your kindness is our lasting inheritance, and your beautiful soul will live on in our hearts forever. Rest in peace, my beautiful brother.
