In Loving Memory of
Michael Steven Phillips
November 23, 1950 – May 2, 2020
Michael Steven (Steve) Phillips passed away on May 2, 2020 at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, Texas. Steve was born on November 23, 1950 in Gatesville, Texas, where he spent his childhood. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Mitchell Phillips and Norma Jean Huff and by his sister, Susan Kay Phillips McKissack.
After graduating from Tarlton State University with degrees in business and music, Steve moved to Duncanville, Texas. He worked for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years, moving up through the ranks, retiring as a director. During his time at the Postal Service, Steve also pursued his love of music and performing. He became a founding member of a band called “The Habit”. Steve’s love of music was passionate throughout the years as he played his bass guitar for the enjoyment of his fans in the Dallas area.
Four years after retiring, Steve and his current wife, Irene Pierce Phillips, moved to Sunshine Country Club Estates in Harlingen, Texas. Steve became an avid golfer and he golfed regularly for the four years he lived in Sunshine Estates. He would never miss his daily round at noon with his good friends. Steve never stopped enjoying playing his bass or guitar. He even dabbled in playing with a band in Harlingen. Steve’s main interest was his musical instruments. He played them to the very end, to the great entertainment and joy of his loving wife Irene. Also, Steve greatly enjoyed traveling with Irene to the oceanside at nearby Padre Island.
Steve is survived by his son Jonathan A. Phillips and his wife, Megan, along with his four adored grandchildren, Carley, Abigail, Emma and Zander. Steve also has many stepchildren and grandchildren that he loved and stayed close to from his marriage with his deceased wife, Peggy, and from his marriage with his current wife, Irene.
Steve has many close friends in the Dallas area, where he lived for over 50 years. He also made many good friends during the last four years of his life in Harlingen. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his many friends that will never be filled.
Steve Phillips – Forever loved and never forgotten.

Steve, you were always so happy when me and your Mom showed up to listen to your band. Loved your music, loved those swimming parties with all the family. Those were good times and sweet memories. Some of my fondest memories were when Susan was there too. You were the best when your Mom was in the hospital. You never left her side for the 35 or 40 days she was there. She knew you were there and there were times she would look over and say, “Steve” and you would always jump up and say “I’m here”. So sweet, I’ll never forget it. I’m glad you met Irene. You loved her so much and she was a perfect mate for you. I love you, Steve. Say hello to all our family for me. Your favorite Aunt Patti.

I love you cousin Steve. You always helped me back in the day with my music and recorded my first demo tape. I got a bit older and started having kids then swimming at Steve’s was always the best. You taught me so much about life and especially the important things in life. I love you brother. Until we meet again…….

I had the pleasure of visiting Steve and Irene many times in Duncanville, TX . I always loved hearing Steve play the guitar. He would play the oldies and Irene and I would sing along. Enjoyed swimming with them in their great pool. Steve was a master griller also and fixed so much food with ease. He loved life and he loved my sister Irene. Love you Steve RIP.

I loved listening to Steve playing his guitar from the deck of my home across the street from their house in Country Club Estates. Irene and I became fast friends when they moved in and my husband Bret and I enjoyed the company of Steve and Irene often. Sending my love, prayers, and condolences to Irene and their family and friends.
