James Joseph Quinn Obituary
James Joseph Quinn of Riverdale, NY and Spring Lake, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 21, 2026, at the age of 80.
Jim was a devoted husband of 58 years to Agnes (nee McComiskey), doting and beloved father to Mari-Christina McGlinn (Michael) and Caroline Roszkowski (Matthew). He most treasured his role as a proud “Papa” to the four grandchildren he adored: Anne Claire and Brendan James McGlinn and Elizabeth Agnes and John Matthew Roszkowski.
Born in New York City on August 13, 1945, to Irish immigrants James and Kathleen Quinn, Jim grew up in the Astoria and Jackson Heights neighborhoods, spending summers at Rockaway Beach, the “Irish Riviera”. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School and then was proud to attend Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, an all-boys academic scholarship school at the time. For a first-generation American, his four years and the education he received at “Loughlin” were his start at attaining the American dream that his parents wished for their three children. He looked back on those years and the many friendships he formed there with tremendous gratitude. He made it his mission to put that gratitude into practice and served on Loughlin’s Board of Governors and remained active in fundraising for the school.
Jim went on to receive a BA in English from Fordham University, an MA in English from New York University, an MBA in Finance and Accounting from New York University and finally a law degree from St. John’s University School of Law. He spent time as an English teacher in the South Bronx and a CPA at Peat Marwick, Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse before starting his own law practice, furthering the work he loved as a CPA and attorney and working with clients who became friends. He also served as board member and Treasurer of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce for over 25 years.
Jim savored the simpler moments spent with his family in his second “Irish Riviera”- at home in Spring Lake, NJ. He relished family dinners at the dining room table, walks to Lake Como, running the Spring Lake 5, time spent with long-time friends and Saturday morning donut runs.
Jim is survived by his loving siblings, Terrence (Dolores) Quinn, Kathleen Jappe and sister-in-law Julia McComiskey. He was predeceased by his devoted brothers-in-law, Thomas Jappe and Michael McComiskey. He is also survived by his cherished nieces and nephews in the United States and loving cousins in Ireland, a country that held a special place in his heart.
Jim looked at his life through a lens of gratitude and taught his family to do the same. He believed that no matter what obstacles you faced in life, there were always moments for which to be thankful. His family is eternally grateful for the gift that he was to so many and for his enduring legacy focused on family unity, love of country, and steadfast integrity.
Reposing will be held on Sunday, April 26th, at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY from 2:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial Monday, April 27th at St. Gabriel’s Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School: 357 Clermont Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11238. Attention: Scholarship Fund (in memory of Jim Quinn ’63).
