Memories go to the first time we met Darrel. It was arranged for he and Morris Grovum to spend a few nights in our home in August 1973 between the two conventions @ Olympia. He came with enthusiasm and interest in us all. I was 15, my sister Laureen was 18, my parents glad to have Albertan visitors. Have thought of and appreciated these men ever since, Darrel made such good use of his opportunities in life to share himself, his love, his faith, his joy in life because of the hope he had through believing in Jesus and eternal life. An inspiration to me..and to many, with Thanks, Dan

Our times with Darrel are memorable. In 1995, we were with others at the HK airport as we saw Darrel and Simon off to Viet Nam.
Later in 2001, we saw Darrel in Hanoi. Quiet, unseen,, as a serpent on a Rock. The sting of death was not in His tail; but, rather the balm of life was in His tale. He spoke without speaking.

I first met Darrel when I went to Vietnam to teach English in Hanoi in 2003. I instantly felt a bond between us and had many rich days together with him until I left Vietnam in 2012.
One of my richest memories is when he had to move from his bach in Hanoi and came to stay with me for a few weeks before relocating. We had some very rich fellowship together.
His most memorable gospel message for me personally was a story he told about a little seed that had lodged in the crack of a huge boulder and it put down roots and became so powerful it split the boulder in two. It was a beautiful illustration of the power of the gospel to split and soften the hardest of hearts.
Thank you, Uncle Darrel, for all you meant to us.

The thought that came to me when I heard Darrel had passed away was a very mighty gentle warrior for truth has passed to Eternity to be with his Father., Showing us it is possible to walk in this world and be true, kind, gentle, caring, thankful, etc. when the Christ within is on the throne. So very grateful for the day Jack and Darrel brought the Gospel to our home. Grateful for true servants. We have learned that a true servant is one that makes life better for another. That is exactly what happened. Our lives were made so very much better because two men were willing to go and leave their homes and own plans behind. I am forever grateful.

Such an incredible life God planned for Darrel! Instead of sowing natural seed on the family farm he sowed the seed of the gospel all over the world. And such a bountiful harvest! Thank you, Turner family, for sharing your brother with the rest of the world. He became a brother to many, ourselves included. So thankful for his Godly influence that will remain with us.

I was at preps at Lacombe after my first year in the work when Harry & Edna brought Darrel to start in the work – June 1, 1971. He was with us a couple days before leaving for preps at Didsbury. That was just the beginning of a long and special “brother” relationship; fed by the year we spent together in the Yukon, many wiring projects at preps and visits in later years in Viet Nam. I think we all are inspired by him to just focus on our journey a little more that we too can have a harvest as he showed us how.

We were not able to make it to the funeral in Vermilion for Darrel, but were so thankful we were able to watch the service after the fact. Thank you to Willis and team for making this possible. We have special memories of our time with Darrel in Vientiane, Laos. We have special memories of cruising down the Mekong river, Darrell laughing while Dave Hermanson was coaxing us to eat a cricket delicacy. At the time, Darrel was involved in putting together a new hymnbook, translating hymns from English to Vietnamese, no small task.. He told us it was a wonderful exercise, forcing him to study the words of each hymn carefully, to meditate on them. in order to translate. Joy and singing are so often interwoven. It fed our hearts to feel the joy in the Lord that Darrel obviously had. He will be missed. Our hearts go to his family in this time of loss.

Uncle Darrel was a very special friend to Vanessa and I. He was at our wedding. In the early 2000’s I had the special privilege on 3 different occasions of meeting Darrel and other workers in Hongkong as they were all arriving for conventions and I was always there at that time for business. Almost one year ago Uncle Darrel had a part in Our Dad’s funeral. Such a comforting spirit and one who had an interest in everyone he came in contact with. He has gone on to the Home that he was seeing from the “top of the Mountain “

We’re very grateful for God’s work in anh Đại’s life. Grateful for him was willing to be sent by God to our country. Our hearts were touched and fed on by the Lamb’s sentiments that were revealed in his way of life. We never forget the difficult years for him as he faced many challenges and problems of the situation of God’s house in Vietnam. But God knew his love for God’s name and for the sake of God’s Kingdom, He helped him so he could cope. We’re grateful to God and delighted to see the results and prosperity he has contributed greatly to bring for God’s work in Vietnam now, as he courageously and faithfully carries out his responsibilities that God entrusted for him in Vietnam years ago. He fought the good fight. We deeply appreciate this. Sure, we will miss him, but our hearts are filled with joy and comfort to know now he’s in Heaven and truly rest with God forever.

I met Darryl in 2003 during a visit to VN….I’m sure he wouldn’t remember me~but I followed him. from list to list.
His service has deeply touched me: amazing how one can feel condemned & inspired at the same time…his zest for life~his abandoning of ALL to fit into God’s place for him~accepting whatever was his portion with Grace…leaves me to begin anew today, inspired to fill my tiny place..
His influence will leave a continuing impact on many lives~mine being one.

    These days, we, Vietnamese friends
miss uncle Darrel – Anh Đại a lot.
He was very dear to all of us in Vietnam’s Churches.
Anh Đại was the fisrt workers who told me about God in 1995 in Hanoi.
I’m so thankful to know him. And I’m so thankful for the time he was here – trying to help me know the way of God, help me to understand how much God loves me.
He was the first one who taught me how to pray for love and mercy from God.
When he was here in Hanoi, we were so happy to have him with us for fellowship meetings and Gospel classes. He was the big help & encouragement for us. He trully was our “Người Anh Em Yêu Dấu” here in Việt Nam. He was our Vietnamese dear brother.
My heart was touched when uncle Willis began the Memorial Service by “Xin chào”. I believe that Darrel would love to hear “Xin chào“ once again and he would smile there.
Good bye our dear brother Darrel. Hope to see you someday in the Kingdom!

Uncle Darryl was some of the first worker I’ve met in Vietnam before being adopted by some of the friends in WA state, USA. I vividly remember riding in the front of the motorbike with uncle Daryl in Vietnam as a little girl. He told me in Vietnamese, sister, don’t be afraid as my little brother and I hung on to him as he navigate the chaotic Vietnamese traffic and people looking at us (here this Canadian man with 2 little Vietnamese kid). I will never forget uncle Darryl’s soft smiles, gentle spirit, and infectious laugh. He had a way about him that always brought peace and calmness. I will miss him. I’m thankful I met uncle Darryl and will always remember his spirit. Canada was his first home, then Vietnam, now he can finally say he’s truly HOME. I can’t wait to see him HOME someday.

Our thoughts & care go to Darrel’s family, co-workers & friends. We so enjoyed our privileges in Viet Nam in 2008. Darrel was so kind in all his planning for us—even, too, calling friends saying I would rather ride the bikes than in the mini vans. Like Darrel I loved the friends in VN—the work of God in their hearts. With the live stream today of Darrel’s memorial service & the pictorial tribute lots off special memories came flooding over me again. Glad for Darrel’s years of labor both in VN & home. I did not believe when receiving the bad news. All the memories of you Darrel suddenly appear to me in a very special way. I still remember clearly the afternoon we first met in Hanoi in 2004, a Canadian gentleman with kind smile and tender voice really impressed me. I love your sharing as if God was preaching me. Then I was fortunate enough to have met you 3 other times in Saigon later, particularly when you and Anh Cuong offered my wife and myself a big bowl of Pho. It was 2018 and I never thought it was our last time seeing each other. These wonderful memories will still live on in our heart. Definitely, you will be lovingly remembered and missed, Darrel.

Our caring thoughts go to all the Turner families at this time. The special occasions we had with Darrell were usually tied to our living close to the Willis Turner family who we’ve enjoyed fellowship with through the years. We’re so grateful for Darrel’s encouraging example and sharing in many meetings and conventions. His ministry and friendship will surly be missed.

Don’t believe Darrel ever came to our convention here at Boring. He was scheduled for Saginaw one year, and our daughter in law, Marlene Tschetter Rumsey, was so excited and they’d made plans to go see and hear him, but don’t believe he got there as it was the year his mother died? Right? Seems we heard him in BC one year….and if my memory serves me right, I remember him as being a humble, godly, but also fun loving man. Lovely to think of him enjoying now what he lived for in a fuller measure than he ever could on earth. More and more I find myself envying those who get to go home. We lost our precious Dean Brewer in June. Very unexpectedly. We still deeply feel the loss.

Darrrel’s smile, spirit and enthusiastic love for souls is unforgettable. One of our memories of Darrel goes back to Didsbury days. He told those of us working in the dining shed that a spirit of service was more important than efficiency. He just wanted each of us to do our best. He, too, gave his best till God took him home.

To know Darrel was to love him…. because the sweet Spirit of Christ was so evident and so inspiring. I met Darrel in his early years in the work and his happy smile, his enthusiasm, his great sense of humor made him very special, but it was his love for souls and his keen interest in everyone he talked to that left a huge impression and influence in my young life. His family was very special to me as well. It has been a privilege beyond all words to follow Darrel through his last weeks, days and hours as he continued to pour out his love and strength for others…until the final moment when an angel carried him Home. It inspires me to look forward to our eternal Home with love and faith like Darrel had.

I hope I will never forget Darrel’s beaming smile whenever he came into meeting, or any room for that matter! I remember even as a small child, I didn’t yet understand much of what was said in those meetings, but that smile and the ever-present peace that was felt, that was inspirational…. whatever was making Darrel so joyful, I wanted to have that in my life! I recently found some gems from Darrel from over 30 yrs. ago. He’d said, (in reference to the word, example, and Spirit)…” what we see remains longer than what we hear, and what we feel remains longer than what we see…”

Some times, we hear a person’s name, and our hearts glow. There are many Loving Brethren around the world we don’t see much. Yet oh how we remember their thoughts they have shared. The picture they paint upon our hearts, of those that have chosen to follow Jesus, and we learn of the beautiful Brethren all over this earth.
The Love that shines out of a companionable heart glowing within their warm eyes.
No doubt of the care for the flock, within that Faithful heart. What an amazing privilege to have met them, and had part with them in a Meeting, Special Meeting, Gospel Meeting, and Convention.
This wonderful man, showed us the meaning of Brotherly Love. JESUS has Darrel in his Loving arms, and the joy he is partaking in is breathless.
My wholehearted Thankfulness to his family, frends, and Co-Workers, who Loved and encouraged his choice to walk with Jesus, and taught us all, there is no other path greater, than the path Christ left for us, and how to follow faithful till safely in our Heavenly Father’s arms. As we both share similar vintage with Darrel, it strengthened the bond of brotherhood and love for each other. Having had the privilege of spending time in Viet Nam with Darrel and attending the very first Sunday AM meeting in Hanoi without the use of our hymn books, it will never be forgotten. He shared so helpfully the cost by which the Gospel is brought. He mentioned that at Hythe Convention there has been a lack of water to supply the needs of Convention. He asked U. Willis for advice and he said we must pay the price to dig deep and reach adequate water by which they did and have enjoyed adequate since. We are most grateful for Darrel’s efforts in all his fields that helped establish men, women, boys and girls become established in the Faith. We are most appreciative for the love administered to Darrel these final months and feel thankful to be apart of such a loving family.

Darrel’s “pouring out” to the last has left a deep impression…pouring out at his last conventions, even Gospel meetings after convention when he had such little strength….in his hospital room! Darrel had been a great help and encouragement to me in many ways through the years. A true brother and friend indeed. Many of our friends in Vietnam have expressed their thankfulness to Darrel’s life and his love for the Truth and for us. It was my great privilege to have him as my first companion. We had shared many precious experiences together.

I can still remember what he spoke at Boring conv on one of his early home visits from VN about our “mother tongue” getting in the way of learning the language of heaven. He was always so helpful.

We feel for the family and co Workers of uncle Darrel… What a privilege we had to have Uncle Darrel with Andy (Nicky’s brother) Robijn for a brief visit in our home in Potchefstroom South Africa . So much enjoyed his presence and what he shared with us. Our kids loved him and his stories

We have fond memories of Darrel & Tom in our little home on the homestead during his first year in the work.
He was with us in later years as well, and was beloved by our family.

Very special to have had three years with Darrel in Laos. His daily discipline and love for the Gospel and labor for a few souls there will be fondly remembered.

I’m glad for the years I labored with Darrel in Vietnam. It was very evident that his heart was there with the Vietnamese people while he was there, & also after he returned to Canada.
It has been very special to be able to follow along on the last miles of his journey. It’s very beautiful to see fruit ripening, & sweetening, as God prepares to take it Home to be with Him.

    Dear family
    Just think-
Of stepping on shore and finding it is heaven
Of taking hold of a hand and find it is God’s hand….
Of waking up and finding you’re home!
Darrel has left us with wonderful memories of kindness and a true example.

Darrel was my father in the Gospel; such a true and spiritual brother, always such a help. We heard in our Gospel Meeting yesterday the list in Hebrews 11 just got longer. I am so thankful to have had the privilege of knowing Darrel, and pray memories of his gentle spirit will continue to influence me until I reach my journey’s end.
