    Angie,
I’m so sorry for your loss. I just finished watching Skip’s memorial. Very moving. I barely knew him through work but from what I have read and heard, would have been a wonderful person to know. It looks like you have many warm memories to see you through.

Love you Angie and Skip! So many, many cherished memories from our trips and time spent together. Skip’s personality was magnetic. George and I were drawn to him from the moment we met. How blessed you are Angie that God placed you both in each other’s lives. You nurtured and brought out the best in each other. What an absolute gift. I’m here for you my friend and always will be.

Many great memories of Skip when I was a very young teenager. One of the fondest memories was taking a family road trips to Indiana and Toronto in his station wagon and always making me feel like I was part of the family. Thank you for all the memories, you will be miss dearly.

Skip was my cousin on my Mother’s (Nona Rivera) side. He was my 3 or 4th cousin but I felt like first cousins. He had a passion for history and learning about his family and so did I and my Mother. He had originally reached out to my grandmother Lucille Stembel in the 1980s because he wanted to expand the Stembel history and was researching Jerome Stembel’s family. I believe one of Jerome’s brothers started Skip’s family line.

The last time I visited with Skip in DC was in 2017. I wanted to see visit Arlington cemetery to visit our relative Rear Admiral Roger N. Stembel. I wanted to post a picture of us but was not able to.

On Easter this year, my Uncle Paul Stembel, had brought over a box full of old pictures he found in the basement. I couldn’t wait to share them with Skip but unfortunate I was too late.

I’m going to miss Skip tremendously, our whole family will. He was a great person, thoughtful, good listener, so knowledgeable about family history and any other topic for that matter.

We are so sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I knew Skip at North Side Junior High and Elkhart High School, when we were both young students. We often talked between classes and ate lunch together. We also played together in Miss Elmquist’s orchestra and contest ensembles. Skip was a good young cellist. I remember him for his quiet friendliness and conscientiousness. After graduation, we lost track of each other for several decades, until meeting and rekindling our friendship on the internet. I was delighted with our new friendship, finding Skip to possess a wonderful perspective on life and world events with a keen analytical mind and the ability to express his ideas eloquently. I feel a real sense of loss at his passing, despite not having actually seen him in nearly sixty years. Skip was one of the comforting and challenging people in my life, even at such a distance, and I will miss him.
