Reflections of Life
Sherwood known to many as Spike was born July 24, 1955 in Brooklyn, NY to Jane Oliver and the late Ernest Lee Oliver Sr. He was the third child out of 5 children. Β He and his siblings were members of Mount Hope United Holy Church where they were all baptized and led to Christ at an early age. After graduating Automotive High School Sherwood hung around his uncleβs auto shop where he learned many tricks of the trade. Sherwood learned to play the Tenor Saxophone in his earlier years. This led him to become a member of a local band named The Prisoners of Soul. Their presence was known in the area as they played at numerous local events. In 1983 Sherwood started working with NYC MTA as a Train Conductor he later became a Motor Man and retired as a Supervisor in 2010. Shortly after retiring from MTA Sherwood started a part time job working for SNAP Senior Center where he transported seniors to and from the Center until his final days.

I met Mr. Oliver, when I was with his son on several occasions. From the very beginning I was treated like family, which felt good. We slept at his house, and had a beautiful time . Mr. Oliver was a great & very caring man. Very intelligent and I really was inspired. It was something I will never forget. You will always be in my heart. Rest in peace always. Love is love.

With heartfelt condolences to my Aunt Jane and family.
Memories of Sherwood – he was a happy person. He loved dancing. At every family gathering, he was always the first person on the dance floor. Sherwood also liked to keep me laughing. He would call me by my sisterβs name and I would call him by his brotherβs name. That had become our comical ongoing greeting for each other for the last few years. I will surely miss you my cousin.

I met Spike while I was in school car for train operator in 1991 and he was working Coney Island Yard. He was cool from day one and we would always have great laughs. Down the line he became my assigned TSS in work trains. He was always professional and always looked out for the sisterπ. He kept me on my toes. We stayed in touch even long after his retirement from MTA. I would always send him a text on his birthday and he would laugh that I always remembered ((I had to let him know itβs in my calendar)) lolβ¦our last text communication was for New Yearβ¦He had such an infectious smile and laughβ¦even on my ((not so good days)) I could not help but to smile and laugh with himβ¦Spike you are sorely missed. I thank you for the continued friendship always. My condolences to the OLIVER family ππ½ββοΈπ

Where to I begin? My Brother Sherwood (AKA Spike) was a true big brother to me. We were so close growing up in the hood. We competed in everything, sport, friends and even for the top bunk bed we shared as kids. He was a true inspiration to me through out. He inspired me to play the saxophone, an activity I enjoy to this day. Words cannot express the lost that I’m and feeling. I tried to me as smooth as he was, but could not quite top him. My heart is empty, but I know he will continue to watch over me from Heaven as you did 66 years. I love you big brother. Until we meet again, may you Rest in Eternal Power.

Unc would always pick me up by my head (it was very big for a child my age), and grandma would always yell Sherwood stop. You’re gonna hurt him. Because if that I believe I’ve grown into the 6’4 man I am today. Love you Unc.
