Ivy Fern Melvin Obituary
Ivy Fern Melvin was born on December 13, 1929, in Dauphin, Manitoba to Cora and Melville Fair. She was the eldest child and big sister to siblings, Wilfred, Reta, Lyle, Keith, Bryon, Myrna, Arleigh, Diana, and Dawn.
In 1944, when Fern was 15, the family moved to Port Moody, BC. To help support her parents, she began working at a cedar shingle mill. Shortly afterwards, she met Clifford Melvin at a birthday party. They married on March 27,1947. They had four children, whom they raised on a small dairy farm in Maple Ridge, BC.
Fern made her choice to serve God in 1950 at the age of 20. She continued faithfully in her service to God until her passing on September 21, 2025. This was the fulfillment of her life, bringing peace, joy, and hope.
Fern valued hard work and had a strong work ethic. Over the years, she was employed at various Maple Ridge businesses including Bruce’s Market, Riverside Meats, and Pederson’s Sausage Kitchen. With the Pederson’s, Fern and Cliff also operated a small grocery store.
After retirement, Fern and Cliff spent winters in Hawaii, where they made lifelong friendships. Fern enjoyed Needlepoint and created over a hundred pieces in her lifetime. She also loved baking and cooking for family, friends, and neighbours.
Fern was predeceased by her husband Cliff (2000), her son Dennis (2022), and her granddaughters Karla (1991) and Elma (2024). She was also pre-deceased by her parents, brothers Wilfred, Lyle, and Keith, sister Reta, and brothers-in-law, Hector Laird and Doug Lindenthal.
Left to mourn her passing are her sons Brent (Rita), Dale (Sandy), her daughter Arden (John), her daughter-in-law Barbie, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Also mourning her passing are her brothers, Bryon (Kathy), Arleigh (Heather), sisters Myrna, Diana (George), Dawn, sisters-in-law, Louise and Marjorie, and many extended family members and friends.

Fern was such a warm and loving person. She was a big part of my life growing up in Maple Ridge as we lived only a couple houses away in Thornhill. My dad, (Sheldon) and I would walk there for Wednesday night meetings. We had lots of dinners there too with Cliff and Fern. Such a big loss for the family. My deepest warm condolences to all the family 💞

I didn’t know auntie Fern very well. I have some of her pretty things in my house now. It was wonderful to watch the funeral from work. I loved seeing everyone on the live cam. Love you all! We have a legacy to follow!

Condolences to the Melvin family. Since moving to Vernon we have enjoyed fellowship with the Melvin family. Fern always had a twinkle in her eye and a dry sense of humor as she told stories. She was always serious when it came to her belief in God. We will miss her but won’t forget her

Our thoughts are with you today. We appreciated getting to know Fern and Cliff in Hawaii. They were always encouraging to be with. Even after Cliff died Fern would come and would walk to and from the get togethers at the Food Court. She had a great faith that kept her through every test and strengthened others.

It is hard to accept that Fern has really left us; but even the strong must die. Our friendship with the Melvin’s started in 1954 and we shared many life experiences. Fern had her share of sorrows, but she kept her cheerful spirit and faith in God until the very end and finished with honour. She has gone on to a well deserved rest., but left us with many good memories.

Thinking of the Melvin Family with sincere sympathy and love to all. I am very grateful to Fern, for the kind and warm hospitality throughout her later years in Vernon BC. She had an open heart, always interested in others and a very clear mind in remembering details. I will always treasure Fern’s precious visits of sharing many years of experiences and her caring support. Fern never waivered in her faith of knowing what is right and always valuing God and Jesus. She was a steadfast, strong and encouraging example.
