Rupert Johnson Obituary
Rupert Bertle Johnson was born in Jamaica on November 8, 1933 to Tommy and Edith Johnson. He was the sixth of seven children, but even as one of the younger ones, he earned the nickname of Shepherd because of how he always cared for others.
The caring spirit he showed as a child continued until his final days when he was still asking about others, wanting to make sure all were OK, and expressing deep gratitude for his family and friends. Rupert touched everyone he met. His warmth made those who knew him better, even if they only spent a brief moment in his presence.
Rupert had the kind of character and strength that are rare and precious. He was determined to make a good life for his family after immigrating to Canada, and he did. He was a talented teacher, who inspired the best in his students. He argued political matters with sharp intelligence and good humour. He was also committed academically, from his days at Mico Teachers College in Jamaica, to his studies at the University of Toronto. Moreover, one would struggle to find a single moment when he let anyone down in any way. His word was a commitment he would always keep….always.
After a fulfilling career as a teacher, Rupert spent his retirement caring for his grandsons with the love and devotion that made him and his dear wife Verlyn (known as Avrie) like second parents to them. He also wrote for a community newspaper, and was a historical interpreter, sharing his knowledge with others.
The Knights of Columbus gave him a special joy. Serving with his brother knights was among the highlights in his life.
His wife of 62 years, Verlyn Avrie was his true love. Not a day went by when he didn’t show this love in one way or another, and her love for him was just as strong.
Rupert is survived by Verlyn Avrie (wife), Paula-Mae (daughter), Rupert Jr (son), Brian (son-in-law), Christopher (grandson), Gregory (grandson), Bruce (brother), Rose (sister), all of those who will always have him in their heart.

As long as I can remember, Uncle (cousin) Rupert has been a kind and gentle man. He always had a smile and a laugh for us kids when we would visit, or when they would visit us. He will be missed.
My condolences to the family…
