Bintou Fatima Ojomo passed away at home, in New York on Sunday, May 31, 2020. Bintou was born on February 16, 1989 in Manhattan, New York, daughter of the late Cheick Soukhouna and Juliet Ojomo.
Bintou was raised and grew up in the Bronx, New York. She attended Phillips Academy, in Andover, MA and graduated from Suffield Academy in Suffield, CT in 2007. Bintou attended The London School of Economics and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, in Political Science from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 2012. Bintou continued on to earn a Master of Arts in Fashion Retail Management, from the London College of Fashion in 2014. Bintou excelled in her career as a Statistics Analyst, but her keen eye and sense of fashion was truly her passion.
Bintou, our African princess or so she claimed, was never simply a friend to your family, She was a member of it. She possessed a smile that didn’t just light up a room, it lit up the World. Her travels led to a magnetism that all could flourish from. Bintou never forgot to share her love with a special message, always eloquently expressing how you truly have impacted her life. She was a friend, a sister, a child of God in a world that needs more voices like hers.
Bintou is survived by her sisters Shannon Pearson and Kym Oubre of Los Angeles, California, her cousins Belinda Lartey, Jessica Aryee, and Roberta Akrong -Lartey and Aunt Gwendolyn Lartey of London, UK, as well as her beloved friends all over the globe.
Bintou’s time on this earth may have been cut short but her positivity, kindness and her spirit will continue to thrive in all those whom she touched. The blessing of her love will stay with us until we someday meet again. Peace to you our Bintou, may you know that our lives were better with you in it.
The Suffield Academy will be raising money to officially name an award at Commencement in memory of Bintou. Bintou’s tragic passing deeply moved the Suffield community and this award will be a lasting tribute to her life and her time spent at Suffield. We could not think of a more appropriate way to honor Bintou.
The Bintou F. Ojomo ’07 Memorial Award, established by classmates and friends of Bintou, is awarded to a graduating student of color whose devotion to others is keenly expressed in their enthusiasm, joy, and leadership and who helps make Suffield a kinder, more just, and accepting community.
